Goals Update - April 17, 2010

Stage 1: Character

Occupation Goal – I will continue to be seen as a valuable asset at work by being open to new ideas and job tasks, being a change leader and seeking new responsibilities. I continue to take on more responsibilities at work and initiate change within my department and company.

Family Goal – It is very difficult for me to watch my great-grandmother and my grandparent’s age with difficulty. My great-grandmother and my grandparents all have health issues and I’d prefer to remember them in mind and spirit how they were before they became ill. I will put aside these misgivings and make sure to contact them once per month by telephone so I do not regret missing the opportunity should they pass away and I was too selfish to speak with them, as I still feel to this day when my Great Grandmother Curtis passed away in 1997. I called all of my grandparents and my great-grandmother just to talk to see how they were doing.

Stage 2: Education and Scholarship

Occupation Goal – I will pursue workshops and conferences to supplement my marketability at work. I will also begin working on my Master of Arts in Genealogical Studies when the program receives accreditation. I am leaving on Tuesday, April 20 for a four day seminar for the printing industry. This will allow me to become even more familiar with the intricacies of the field.

Spirituality Goal – I will read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. I continue to read this book and work on the exercises in it.

Family Goal – I will complete my Daughters of the American Revolution and General Society of Mayflower Descendants applications, with complete documentation. I have identified at least 4 American Revolution Patriots from which I descend and 2 Mayflower passengers. I am very close to the completion of my DAR application.

Stage 3: Interests and Talents

Occupation Goal – I will pursue local or national organizations that are built upon the foundation of my position, print procurement, and work with management to become a member, whether as a company or as an individual. I have joined the Advertising Production Club of Detroit as the Treasurer.
Family Goal – My family does not live very close to me, and I am a single woman. However, I have best friends who live only 20 minutes away who have two beautiful children whom I consider family. Oftentimes, my hobbies, school or heir family obligations get in the way. I will make a special effort to plan time with them two times a month for six months over the course of a year (allowing for family obligations and work schedules) to do activities that the children enjoy. At ages two and 12yr their curiosities vary significantly, but Detroit offers a great number of no- and low-cost events for developing minds. I attended my 12 yr old nephew's soccer game today and spent last Thursday, April 15 afternoon playing with my 2 yr old nephew at the park.

Delta Gamma Goal – I will contact the Region 4 Regional Collegiate Specialist and Regional Housing Director to volunteer as an Advisory Team Chairman and/or House Corp member at one or more of the Michigan collegiate chapters (Xi, Zeta or Beta Xi). I was appointed the Advisory Team Chairman for Beta Xi chapter on April 7.

Stage 4: Activities and Honors

Delta Gamma Goal – I will form a Foundation for Fighting Blindness Vision Walk team and invite all Michigan alumnae and collegians to walk with me to raise funds for our Philanthropy for 2010, 2011 and 2012. I have invited all metro Detroit alumnae and Michigan collegiate chapters to join the 2010 Vision Walk team.

Stage 5: Personal Development

Occupation Goal – Learning and growing as an employee has immeasurable benefits in my personal development. No matter what field I chose to pursue, no one can take away the skills I have learned while in my position. I will continue to collaborate with others within my company to gain knowledge particular to business, not specifically my company, but any business. The more connections I make and the more information I gain, the more valuable I become, as a woman, a Delta Gamma and a potential new employee elsewhere. I continue to develop a better understanding of our SAP software in order to help others in my company. I have also started working with design software again, including Dreamweaver, InDesign and Photoshop.
Family Goal – I will be sure to be home every evening to spend quality time with my cats (they deserve attention too). In addition, not only will I recognize my immediate family members with a card for their birthday, I will call them and talk to them as well – even those with whom I feel I am estranged from (particularly my brother and his family). I have been coming home as early as possible every night to spend some time with my cats, and have sent every family member who has had a birthday this year a card.
